Abey is one of the first locally qualified / certified black Mining Engineers. He is the product of Anglo American Coal (Pty) Ltd’s Student Mining Official training programme. He spent his formative years as an operator, Learner Miner, Miner and Shift Overseer at Anglo’s operations.
During the more than 20 years of experience across the mining value chain, he was exposed to different mining methods [national and international (America, Austria, Botswana, Canada, Lesotho, Madagascar, Swaziland and Zimbabwe) at various levels and singles out acting as a Shift Overseer – New Denmark Colliery at the age of 19, as a personal career highlight.
He was appointed as Technical Assistant, thereafter as Underground Manager – Brandspruit Colliery when he joined Sasol Mining (Pty) Ltd in 1996. After several achievements at Sasol Mining, he left as Shaft Manager – Twistdraai Colliery in May 2003 to join Xstrata Coal SA (Pty) Ltd as Mine Manager of Arthur Taylor Colliery. Arthur Taylor Colliery became the flagship of the Xstrata Coal SA Group during Abey’s tenure. He also successfully managed Tselentis and Phoenix Collieries, some of the oldest opencast and underground coal mines in South Africa. Before leaving the employ of Xstrata Coal SA in 2008, he did a feasibility study for an underground coal mine (Consbrey).
Abey was a part-time examiner for the Blasting Certificate (Fiery Mine), the Mine Overseer’s Certificate (Coal) as well as the Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency (Coal) for several years. He also served as a council member for the South African Coal Manager’s Association. He has since done a lot of business and leadership training at various institutions including the University of Pretoria School of Business Leadership (SBL) and the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS).
As part of his community outreach, a number of BEE Junior Miners entering the mining industry, have benefitted a great deal from Abey’s technical assistance.
As from August 2011, Abey assumed the role of Director – Business Development for Legare.
Mr. Robin Borley is a Graduate mining engineering professional and a certified mine manager with more than 25 years of international mining experience building and operating mining ventures. He has held senior management positions both Internationally and within the South African mining industry. He has most recently served as Mining Director for DRA Mineral Projects and was instrumental as the COO of Red Island Minerals in a developing a Madagascar coal venture.
His diverse career has spanned resource project management, evaluation, exploration and mine development. Robin has completed several mine evaluations including operational and financial evaluations of new and existing operations across a diverse range of resource sectors. He has experience in the management of underground and surface mining operations from both the contractor and owner miner environments.
From 2006 through to 2012, Robin participated in the BEE management buy-out transaction of the Optimum Colliery mining property from BHP, through its independent listing and its ultimate sale to Glencore in December 2012.
